Have you ever had one of those moments when everything just falls into place perfectly? You know—the kind where the stars align, and it almost feels like the universe is giving you a tiny wink? Well, that’s what happened for Lindsey and Jake’s engagement session in Edinburgh, Scotland. This shoot was so special, I can’t help but smile every time I think about it.
When I planned my trip to Scotland, I initially envisioned exploring the charming streets of Edinburgh solo, camera in hand, to capture endless photos of historic architecture and charming alleyways. But the closer the trip got, the more I realized that this city, with its cozy winter chill and nostalgic Christmas markets, was just too perfect not to share. On a whim (and if we’re being honest, feeling slightly hesitant), I put out a last-minute Story on Instagram asking if any couples would be in Scotland during my visit and wanted photos. (I did the same during my trip to Madrid, and Elise and Christian were ready and willing to meet up for an impromptu freeform session with me.)
I’ll be honest—I didn’t have high expectations. A rare opportunity like this is unlikely to happen once, much less two times! It was cold, close to the holidays, and the odds felt slim. But just as I was about to give up hope, Lindsey responded! She and her fiancé, Jake, were coincidentally visiting Edinburgh for a weekend getaway. But the serendipity doesn’t stop there—turns out they are also from Washington, my home state! Seriously, what are the odds? (She and Jake have been living in the UK for his basketball career, which is impressive in itself!)
There’s something extra special about connecting with people on the other side of the world who understand exactly where you’re from. It felt like we’d all been friends for ages, wandering the cobblestone streets together, laughing, and chatting about home.
Love the idea of a unique engagement session (or elopement!)
My vision for Lindsey and Jake’s photoshoot was to embrace Edinburgh’s moody charm with subtle Harry Potter vibes—think cozy outfits, ancient stone walls, and slightly mysterious, picturesque alleyways. (Diagon Alley, anyone?) Edinburgh is well-known for its connection to J.K. Rowling’s magical world, and you honestly can’t help but feel a little enchanted walking through its old streets.
As we roamed around corners and discovered hidden pockets of the city—we even found some water features!—the sun peeked out from behind gray clouds just long enough to give us that lovely soft glow. The day was chilly (okay, freezing), but the warmth Lindsey and Jake brought to the session made the cold feel secondary. I fell in love with the way the sun’s rays outlined Lindsey’s silhouette.
What I love most about engagement sessions abroad is the sense of adventure and spontaneity built into the experience. Lindsey and Jake embraced the unexpected opportunity with open hearts, and their relaxed, genuine energy made it easy to capture their love authentically. Watching them laugh, hold hands, and cuddle close against the brisk winter air is exactly why I adore engagement photography—you can capture genuine connections in any setting, anywhere in the world.
If you’ve never visited Scotland or are considering doing your own photos there, let me assure you: it offers so much more than rainy skies and haggis (although, let’s not knock the haggis until we’ve tried it, right?). Like the states, each corner of Scotland has its own unique personality and setting, perfect for photography that suits every kind of couple. Here are a few of my favorites:
Edinburgh itself is a photographer’s dream. With its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and bustling markets, the city offers backdrops ranging from elegant sophistication to moody romance. Perfect for couples who want an urban feel with a magical twist (think old bookstores, warm cafes, and hidden alleyways).
For those looking for rugged adventure, Scotland’s Highlands are breathtaking—vast hills, misty mountains, sweeping valleys, and peaceful lochs. The Highlands are perfect for adventurous couples who want to showcase their connection against an epic, dramatic backdrop.
Quaint fishing villages, picturesque harbors, and rugged beaches adorn Scotland’s coastline. These towns offer a more relaxed, intimate photoshoot with seaside strolls, cozy sweaters, and warm drinks.
If your style leans toward fairytale romance, Scotland is home to countless castles (both ruined and preserved). Each has a fascinating history, offering a regal and timeless photoshoot setting. I would love to do a photoshoot at one of these!
Dense, ancient forests and wooded glens (not unlike the PNW) offer moody, atmospheric backdrops. Perfect for those who love a touch of mystery, quiet intimacy, and the sense of being completely wrapped up in the moment and adventure.
Thinking back to Lindsey and Jake’s session, I’m so thankful that everything aligned as it did. Their willingness to embrace the spontaneous nature of the day led to some of my favorite photos—and memories—from the whole trip.
