If you’re dreaming of a wildly romantic and adventurous escape for your big day, Mount Cook, New Zealand, should 100% be on your radar. It’s a slice of heaven with jaw-dropping alpine views, starlit skies, turquoise lakes, and an unmistakable sense of peace that’s hard to find anywhere else. As an elopement photographer, I’ve had the incredible honor of capturing couples’ most intimate moments in some of the world’s most awe-inspiring locations. Mount Cook is in a league of its own.
Recently, I had the pleasure of documenting Ashley and Caroline’s multi-day elopement – an unforgettable journey filled with campervan adventures, epic hikes, field romping, dreamy stargazing, and heartfelt vows. Their story is everything an elopement should be: personal, meaningful, and full of magic. And we had the best vendor team to make it all happen. (A big thank you to Home in the Mountains for hosting the shoot, The Vase Floral for the gorgeous bouquet, and Nordeen Bridal for the flowy satin dress.) If you’re considering eloping to New Zealand, let me walk you through their experience and share some tips to help you plan your own Mount Cook elopement.
Mount Cook, also known as Aoraki in Māori, is New Zealand’s highest mountain (12,217 feet!) and an absolute magnet for adventure-loving couples. Whether you’re into hiking, stargazing, or simply soaking up breathtaking views, this spot is a paradise for those who want an elopement that’s equal parts romantic and wild.
Here are a few reasons why Mount Cook should top your elopement list:
Ashley and Caroline wanted their elopement to feel like a grand adventure, and what better way to explore New Zealand’s South Island than with a campervan? They spent five incredible days discovering the beauty of Mount Cook and its surroundings – combining their elopement with an unforgettable road trip.
If you’ve never been to New Zealand but find yourself falling head over heels in love with the scenery, you may be wondering how to make this happen. Here’s a sample elopement timeline to get you started (you can always tweak and adjust as needed, and I’d love to help with that!).
Head to Mount Cook Village with a scenic drive through the Mackenzie Basin. Along the way, make a pit stop at Lake Pukaki (a must for anyone visiting the area) to take in its unreal, glacier-fed turquoise waters. We can park at White Horse Hill Campground, nestled in the shadow of the towering peaks.
Pro Tip: Ashley and Caroline’s campervan road trip was a huge part of their adventure, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s the best way to explore New Zealand at your own pace, waking up to epic views every morning. There are plenty of campervan rental options, and freedom camping is a popular (and budget-friendly) choice here. Just make sure to follow local camping rules to keep these pristine spaces protected.
After a cozy dinner in the campervan or picnic setup, we can take some sunset photos and spend the evening stargazing.
Fun fact: Mount Cook is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, making it one of the best places in the world to see the Milky Way. Lying under the billions of stars, let the universe shower you with love.
The next morning, wake up and sip your coffee to the sound of birds and the crisp alpine air. You can leisurely get ready before heading out to exchange vows in the heart of the Hooker Valley Track. This iconic hiking trail is one of Mount Cook’s most picturesque spots, with swinging suspension bridges, wildflowers, and an unbeatable view of Mount Cook itself.
Start with a mid-morning hike, capturing moments along the way. If you’re brave enough, we can laugh our way across the suspended bridges and take in scenes of the towering mountains. At the trail’s end, by the stunning Hooker Lake (sometimes showcasing floating icebergs), exchange vows with Mount Cook watching over you.
Pro tip: The Hooker Valley Track is a relatively easy hike (about 6 miles round trip), making it perfect for couples who want to combine adventure with accessibility. Start early for fewer crowds and softer morning light.
On day three, try an experience like no other – a helicopter ride to Tasman Glacier! It is definitely worth splurging on if you want to see the park from above. The views from the helicopter are jaw-dropping: endless snowy peaks, shimmering glaciers, and endless blue skies.
Depending on the conditions, we may even be able to land on a glacier for some one-of-a-kind portraits. Check out companies like Glacier Helicopters and Glacier Country Helicopters to make it happen. Picture standing together on a vast sheet of ice, surrounded by mountains – it doesn’t get more epic than that. For couples considering a helicopter elopement, several tour companies even offer scenic flights and glacier landings for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
With vows exchanged and portraits captured, be sure to spend a few days simply soaking in the beauty of Mount Cook. You can explore the Tasman Lake Track, kayak on Lake Pukaki or Lake Tekapo, and savor the panoramic views of Aoraki Mount Cook.
If you want to enjoy some local accommodations during your trip, Mount Cook also has incredible stays like the Hermitage Hotel or cozy alpine lodges.
New Zealand makes it super easy to get married. International couples can apply for a marriage license online, and a registered celebrant can officiate your ceremony anywhere. The process is refreshingly straightforward if you plan to exchange vows in New Zealand. Simply complete the application for a marriage license at least three working days in advance, and once approved, you’re free to marry at any location of your choosing—be it a scenic vineyard, rugged mountain peak, or serene beachfront. Just ensure your chosen celebrant is legally registered to perform the ceremony. With minimal paperwork and no residency requirements, New Zealand caters to adventurous couples seeking a stress-free yet unforgettable elopement experience.
Mount Cook is stunning year-round, but the seasons offer different vibes.
Whether you’re chasing adventure or embracing tranquility, a New Zealand elopement will leave you feeling connected to your partner and the awe-inspiring nature around you. If this sounds like a dream, I’d love to help make it happen for you!
