You might recognize me as your PNW photographer—capturing adventures along the coastlines of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. Recently, I stretched my creative boundaries beyond familiar trails and forests. Last year, I announced my European travel schedule on social media. To my delight, several couples quickly reached out, excited to meet up for photo sessions across Europe. (Be sure to check out this dreamy couple’s session turned surprise proposal in Florence, Italy!) One city I especially looked forward to visiting? Madrid.
When April arrived, I landed in Spain’s vibrant capital, eager for a creative photo opportunity. So, I shared a quick model call on Instagram, hoping to connect with a couple visiting Madrid at the same time. Luckily, Elise and Christian were traveling nearby and reached out right away.
They had just arrived in Madrid after a stay in Portugal. Before the shoot, they invited me out to breakfast, setting a relaxed and friendly vibe for the day ahead. We wandered Madrid’s lively streets, browsing camera shops and vintage boutiques even before grabbing my camera.
Later that day, we reunited for our official shoot, but this time without a strict plan. Our goal was simple: explore Madrid together in a relaxed, spontaneous way while capturing authentic moments naturally.

A freeform photography session is intentionally unscripted, spontaneous, and photojournalistic in nature. Instead of predetermined poses or locations, we let curiosity guide the way. We wander, discover, and photograph organically along the route. This style allows authentic moments, candid interactions, and creative inspiration to flourish naturally. Each session is unique, shaped by the personalities involved and the city we’re exploring together.

Elise and Christian embraced the freeform experience from the very start. While we had a few iconic spots in mind, we mostly let the city show us its secrets. Wandering on foot led us down hidden streets and into tucked-away corners we never would have noticed otherwise.
Mid-shoot, we stopped at a local shop for the yummiest sandwiches (I would Doordash them here if I could!). And, of course, we couldn’t skip out on the classic (freshly made!) churros. Elise and Christian shared an afternoon espresso and Aperol, fueling our continued exploration. Energized and inspired, we moved toward the iconic Royal Palace and through bustling plazas, capturing quiet moments filled with ornate architecture.
As the day went on, our route took us to Retiro Park, where gorgeous greenery, a glasshouse, water features, and peaceful paths offered endless photo opportunities. Elise and Christian’s genuine connection made every image feel personal and authentic.

Madrid’s golden sunlight created warm, candid imagery throughout the day. Elise and Christian’s genuine connection made each photo feel effortlessly romantic and true to who they are. There were no forced smiles or stiff poses—just real moments unfolding naturally.
At every turn, I found inspiration as we wandered spontaneously through neighborhoods, markets, parks, and cafes. Each unexpected discovery allowed me to photograph Madrid in a fresh, artistic way.
If you’ve ever traveled somewhere new, you know the struggle of awkward selfies and asking strangers for photos. Freeform sessions transform your travel memories into authentic, visually compelling stories. Think of it like taking a friend (who just happens to be a professional photographer) along for the ride. You experience the city naturally while I document your adventures unobtrusively.
This spontaneous environment encourages creativity and lets real emotions shine through. No forced smiles or uncomfortable poses—just genuine experiences captured beautifully.

Madrid with Elise and Christian has me falling even more in love with this spontaneous style. Their warmth, relaxed approach, and trust in the creative process made the experience unforgettable.
If posed, traditional photo sessions feel restrictive, a freeform session might be perfect for you. Explore a new city or favorite neighborhood naturally—no pressure, no strict schedules. Enjoy the experience while your photographer captures authentic moments. It’s photojournalism meets adventure, documenting genuine stories and spontaneous connections.
Thank you, Elise and Christian, for sharing your Madrid adventure with me. It was a privilege to capture your genuine moments as we explored this gorgeous city together. I can’t wait to photograph more freeform sessions like this one—relaxed, creative, and full of surprises.
Where should we explore next?

If you’re planning a trip, consider a freeform session to document your travels. You’ll end up with beautiful, spontaneous memories—captured honestly, artistically, and without stress. If you like my style, get in touch so we can sync up our travel schedules. (Or let me know if you plan on visiting the PNW! I’d be happy to double as your travel guide and photographer for a day if you’re in my neck of the woods.)
