Summer always holds a special kind of magic for me. As the days get warmer, longer, and drenched in golden sunshine, it’s like the world is gently nudging us to slow down and enjoy life’s simplest pleasures. That slower pace and sense of nostalgia is what I adored most about Kenna and Garett’s engagement shoot in the lush countryside of New York’s Hudson Valley. It was a gentle reminder to embrace our inner child and savor the small moments together.
Set against the backdrop of Windrift Hall and Owls Hoot Barn—both historic gems dating back to about 1800—this session was part of a photographer’s retreat hosted by @estherscannon and @milesleavphoto designed to push creative boundaries, explore new ways of storytelling, and rekindle a love for authentic, candid photography. Kenna and Garett came ready to soak up the sunshine, have fun, and celebrate their love story in the simplest way.
We started our day on vintage-inspired bikes, pedaling lazily along quiet tree-lined dirt roads. Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but something about bicycles instantly brings me back to carefree childhood summers. Remember those days? When skinned knees were badges of honor, and you raced friends down winding lanes shouting, “Look, no hands!” Kenna and Garett brought that playful energy to our shoot, laughing easily, egging each other on, and genuinely having the best time.
As a destination engagement photographer, one of my favorite parts of capturing couples is seeing how their friendships shine through their relationship. The way Garett instinctively steadied Kenna’s bike as we stopped for a break, or how they’d exchange mischievous glances before racing off again—it all spoke volumes about their comfort and connection. There’s something wonderfully genuine about documenting a couple who can forget I’m there and just have fun. These two were naturals.
After their nostalgic bike ride, the day led us to a nearby swimming hole, one of those dreamy little spots tucked away in the valley. It was the perfect place to cool off after our bike ride adventure. The refreshing water and dappled sunlight only amplified the joy and connection Kenna and Garett shared. They laughed, splashed, and soaked in the magic of summer together. Watching them felt like witnessing a private moment of pure happiness—one that you happen to stumble across by happy accident.
The whole spirit of our shoot was about letting go of expectations and simply embracing the day as it unfolded. One thing I love about these sessions is how effortlessly they encourage couples to lean into their true selves. For some couples, engagement shoots can feel pressured and overly serious, but when you choose an activity or environment that’s genuinely enjoyable for you, all that pressure melts away. Suddenly, you’re left with real memories—not just snapshots—captured forever. Kenna and Garett embraced this wholeheartedly. They weren’t concerned about getting dirty or looking perfectly posed. They simply enjoyed each other’s company, let go, and allowed themselves to have real, genuine fun. And it showed beautifully in their photos.
If you’re planning your own engagement photos, whether close to home or at an exciting destination, I always encourage couples to think about activities they genuinely enjoy. What do you usually do on lazy weekends or spontaneous date nights? Maybe you find peace with a picnic blanket and a good book, or perhaps you love the thrill of kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. Dance freely in the grass, build sandcastles at the beach, or just relax and chat while you collect seashells—whatever brings you joy is exactly the right choice for your shoot.
Engagement sessions aren’t just about creating beautiful photos—though that’s always a bonus! They’re about capturing your love in a way that feels real and familiar, moments you’ll look back on and instantly remember the laughter, warmth, and connection you shared. Kenna and Garett’s session did just that, reminding me again why I fell in love with photographing couples in the first place.
As the sun set slowly over Windrift Hall, bathing everything in a warm golden glow, it was not hard to feel grateful. Grateful for summertime adventures, the beauty of Hudson Valley, and couples like Kenna and Garett, who remind us all how it feels to laugh easily, love openly, and savor life’s small moments.
Here’s to summer and celebrating love in the most authentic ways—may we all ride bikes with “no hands,” dive into calm waters, and embrace our inner child every now and then. Thank you, Kenna and Garett, for letting me share this beautiful day with you. I hope these photos bring you as much joy as capturing them brought me.
Here’s to more sunny summer days, spontaneous adventures, and a lifetime of authentic moments together.
