If you’re newly engaged and dreaming of photos that capture more than just your smiles—maybe a little rugged landscape, a dash of adventure, and a whole lot of personality—you’re in the right place. Recently, I had the chance to photograph Keely and Nash’s engagement session in Arizona’s stunning Superstition Mountains at Lost Dutchman State Park, and I picked up plenty of tips along the way. Whether you’re based in Arizona or planning to travel for your session, here’s what you need to know to make your adventure engagement shoot just as memorable (and stress-free!). As your Phoenix photographer, I’m more than happy to be a resource for you as you coordinate outfits, weather, and locations.

Sometimes the best adventures happen by chance! I was second shooting a wedding in Phoenix, so posted about my travel availability on Instagram, and Keely reached out. She and Nash wanted to capture their engagement while I was in Arizona, and we decided to get up at sunrise to beat the heat and crowds.
They chose a fabulous location—the Supersition Mountains at the intersection of Tonto National Forest and Lost Dutchman State Park, and their outfits were on-point (his cowboy hat and her boots were perfection). Keely and Nash made the most of the Arizona backdrop. (I LOVE this location. It’s know for it’s mix of mountain ridges and forest—aka “spines to pines”—so we have lots of options.)

Here’s how you can plan your own unforgettable outdoor engagement session in the Superstition Mountains (or elsewhere!—see below for a list of locations and how you can get a discount on your photography package or wedding!):
Arizona explodes with wild beauty, from cacti-filled deserts to pine-covered peaks. State and national parks are ideal if you want jaw-dropping views in your photos, and you don’t even have to hike far (so bring along those cute shoes if you’d like). For Keely and Nash, we chose the Superstition Mountains area because it’s close to Phoenix, offers a variety of landscapes, and is less crowded than some better-known spots.

Arizona light is everything. We met at sunrise—yes, it meant an early alarm and extra coffee, but the soft, golden light was worth it. Early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) are your best bets for flattering, glowy photos. Plus, it’s cooler and you’ll avoid the crowds. However, in the summer, temperature usually don’t fall much until dusk (as you know if you’re a local).
Pro tip: Sunrise is especially great near Phoenix, since the desert heats up quickly and parking lots fill up fast. The sparkles are so dazzling they almost look like a filter. (I assure you, it’s not!)

Outfit planning can feel daunting, but it’s easier than you think:

You don’t need a full camping kit, but a few simple items make a big difference for a desert session:
Pro Tip: Even if you aren’t a lip color gal, consider adding just a bit for your session. The light and backdrop can come on pretty strong, so a pop of color will bring out your features, highlight your face, and complement your eyes.

Outdoor sessions aren’t about perfection—they’re about capturing your real dynamic as a couple. Be ready for a little dust, wind, and rugged beauty in your shot. If you’re worried about posing, don’t be. The best moments happen while you’re exploring, laughing, or just taking in the view together. (And I promise to guide you.)
Keely and Nash were absolute naturals. We wandered trails, danced among the cacti, and just let things unfold. If you trust your photographer and stay present, your photos will reflect your real connection—and that Arizona magic.

A quick note: Most parks require small entry fees. We shouldn’t need a photography permit because it’s not for commercial use, but we may need to purchase a day pass. Connect with me to plan for your chosen location. And whether you’re in a national forest or state park, follow Leave No Trace guidelines—pack out what you pack in, and respect the natural environment.

Seriously! I know you want your session to be perfect (this is a monumental chapter, after all!), but the best photos happen when you’re genuinely enjoying the moment. Whether you’re skipping along a trail, sharing a snack, or just soaking in the sunrise, those are the memories you’ll love looking back on.
